When I have the Classic Theme enabled (I am running Windows 8.1), the network pop-up breaks and will not show up if the tray icon is clicked. If I lock my account, and use the Network button on the log-in screen, it soft-locks, which means I cannot interact with anything in the log-in screen, and thus I can only force my computer down. I would like to know if I'm the only one that has problem.

I got Windows 10 32-bit explorer running without themes using the __COMPAT_LAYER DISABLETHEMES variable / regedit compatibility layers Unfortunately aero is still running, but i have classic buttons and scroll bars lol I'll try this out on my vm's and see if I can get it the taskbar working. At the moment I just use a scheduled task to run applicationframehost then close the handle on winlogon as soon as explorer has launched (so my taskbar and setting still work)

When explorer.exe crashes after having the Classic Theme enabled via the batch file that's provided in a post on these forums, the taskbar and Start Menu get messed up.

Also, I have been noticing the transparency issue in windows such as the one shown here: Is it fixable? If so, how?

I got around to installing Windows 8.1 on my main rig, and it does the same thing as what I witnessed in a VM after installing Classic Theme - on each boot, I'm always welcome to a black screen and a single instance of the File Explorer. Only way to sort things out and get a normal desktop back, is to log out and back in.
Any way to solve this?

Running Wefi in Win95-compatibility mode fixes the issue with black border of its pop-up window.

Running Wefi in Win95-compatibility mode fixes the issue with black border of its pop-up window. Actually, CustomNCRender compat mode is enough.

I have a really weird problem in W8.1. I can't connect to the VPN of my university if I have classic theme enabled. I can connect to it without classic theme and then activate it but if I disconnect from it then I can't connect again.

I'm only having the control panel item issues. Everything else works fine (Windows 10 build 18963, an Insider build after 1903)

Is it fixable? If so, how? One way to fix it is to enable an accessibility (high contrast) theme in Windows settings before enabling the Classic theme. But it brings other issues (some browsers by default enter the high contrast mode, the logon screen becomes grey).

The issues are outdated. I think I can edit the original post to reflect the more modern knowledge.

Was wondering if anyone has a fix yet for the following two issues: 1. Combined buttons on taskbar not displaying text (see attached image); 2. Not being able to click at the very bottom of the taskbar and have it click on the button. When you did this on Windows 7, the cursor would automatically move up one pixel when you clicked so that it would reach the item you were trying to click, but on 8.1, you just end up clicking the space below the item. I think I remember somebody saying there was a script that could fix this. Is this still a working solution, and/or is there another way around it? Attachments:

Wow, I just discovered that if you unlock the taskbar, it actually works like it did in Windows 7. At least it is for me.

The ribbon can be fixed by using the Windows 7 ribbon dlls. On paint and wordpad, it works perfectly. On File Explorer, it only works some of the time. When dwm is off (Basic theme only) it works perfectly. I haven't tested Classic Theme with dwm off yet. I cannot upload the ribbon dlls on this forum, so you have to get them yourself. The dll names are "UIRibbon.dll" "UIRibbonRes.dll" and "UIRibbon.dll.mui" (.mui file is in the locale folder).

I do not use combined buttons and I use 7+TT to make the context menus the same as in Win95.

So obviously there are currently some issues with the classic theme. This thread is meant to document some of those issues. This post will be updated if/when a fix for an issue is found, or when a new issue is reported or discovered. Windows 8:Explorer:- The three 'phantom' alt-tab applications (they can be removed with fxxkmetro) - 1px placement issue on the taskbar (only when using ClassicTheme.exe in install mode, other methods do not produce this glitch) Windows 10:Explorer:- The taskbar appears black with unreadable text, making it quite annoying to use. - Context menus do not display properly. ( Fix) - Modern apps. Especially a problem when PC Settings needs to be accessed (can be fixed by starting classic theme after app host). Windows 8 and Windows 10:Explorer, Paint, Wordpad:- Ribbon does not display correctly Control Panel Pages that fail to load:- Ease of Access Center - Language - Personalization - Storage Spaces - Work Folders (these can be fixed) Global Interface Issues- Transparency in some windows. ( Fix for Firefox, there are other fix methods) My explorer crashing after startup
