I need help to test this new method of forcing Classic theme (unfortunately, it works only on 32-bit operating systems). The method is in setting the environment variable __COMPAT_LAYER to the value DISABLETHEMES globally: Can anyone please test this method on a 32-bit system? I also think this should allow to use Classic theme on Windows 7 without disabling DWM.

I have an ISO for it. I could try it out in a VM and post back here when I got results.

Welp, that didn't work. And this was after a restart too.

Well, for me, on 64-bit Win 8.1 it affects the 32-bit apps, like Outlook Express.

Does the set command inside a console window show this variable?

Try adding it to the user configuration rather than system configuration.

Still doesn't seem to be working. Well, for the most part anyway. I've tried using the set and setx commands, but to no avail. I did get Internet Explorer to start without themes, but that only happened once. The other times, the text highlight will be unusually bright when I first start it up (like when the classic theme is transparent), but will eventually go back the the normal selection color.

Ensure you have this in the command line:

It you setting the variable from the command line, it works only in that window. If from user configuration, immediately for newly started programs. If in system configuration, it needs reboot. On Win8, not just turning on/off but full reboot. Try this:

Yeah, I'm having trouble getting it to appear in both CMD and the GUI. But I did get Firefox to use the classic theme once when I set its compatibility mode to Windows XP. I'll keep trying though.

If you set it in the user configuration like in the last screenshot, it should appear in all new CMD windows immediately.

It doesn't work for the 32-bit version of Pale Moon when set in Windows 10 64-bit.
