i'd like to use the reactos explorer like that old screen of someone using it on windows 8. however when i try the explorer.exe from the latest or any release it never works, always gives me a error saying it cannot load, one of those generic 0x0000somenumber errors.

You have to use compatibility mode (Windows XP SP3, specifically) really? so simple? thanks, i will try that. edit, there's no xp compat mode on windows 10 rs3 only vista, 7, 8my bad, was trying 64bit explorer.exe, for some reason doesn't show other compat options, os is 64bit. tried 32bit explorer but doesn't work, doesn't load at all if compat options set, gives error without, explorer_old works but doesn't load shell, only window showing drives.

I've tried to use older Explorer.EXEs on newer Windows but gives that error when a Windows 10 built C# program is run on XP or lower. c000017 or something. It would also be kinda cool to have that feel of File Explorer from XP or earlier.

I'd settle for getting back the functionality of WinXP's desk.cpl -- or a guide to hand-edit, as I've tried some copypasta into an existing custom Win10 theme (based on another Win10 theme that did work) and it didn't work. WTF.

A shell that is winversion-agnostic, and configurable to whichever antique you prefer, would probably have the best longevity.

That reactos explorer that spitfire made is an old version if somebody want to make newer version work better you need git bisect to fix the code for newer versions same with reactoes desk.cpl reactos team broke it after version 0.3.9 current reactos is 0.4.9 so fix desk.cpl is welcome too must be renamed to desk2 or something else to work on windows. However spitfires best taskbar so far is the startisback theme

Somebody should convince the trueclassic windowblinds guy to make a portable configurable icon themable classic explorer to run in place of the windows version with features from all windows like the xp hide any toolbar or the 7 grouping of taskbuttons and blue icon at rightemost place at taskbar that shows hides everything and even all control panels through windows history completely eliminate the need for the dreaded metro abomination
