Hey everyone, I have a ZIP file containing various Windows 8.1 shell components, including MSStyles, the Taskbar, Explorer.exe, and more UI elements. I obtained these files from my Windows 8.1 Virtual Machine. If anyone is interested in testing the Windows 8.1 Metro Desktop Theme with the Taskbar, without relying on third-party programs like Startisback++ or StartAllBack, that would be fantastic. I dislike using Startisback++ because it costs money, and we need free solutions that won't risk bricking our devices. If you're willing to overwrite Windows 10's UGLY UI shell components or reverse engineer them, similar to what the ExplorerPatcher team did with Windows 10 UI components, and apply that to Windows 8.1, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm not asking for the Start Screen or any UWP and XAML components, just the Taskbar, which looks much better than Windows 10's UGLY ASS ONE! PS: I also find Windows 10's Theming to look very UGLY AS HELL compared to Windows 8/8.1 they do Flat Design good. Just look at this image of me comparing the 2's UI against each other Windows 8.1 looks way better than Windows 10 hands down I want it to be possible just to be able to make Windows 10 look exactly like Windows 8.1 on an exact 1:1 scale. I want their to be a way to reduce the over reliance on things such as mods (Windhawk), UI customization tools (DWMGlassBlur, or what ever the DWM thingy is..., Startisback/StartAllback, ExplorerPatcher, etc etc), System Tweaking tools and other things we need to save Windows and make customizing it into looking like older versions alot easier. Okay update please download from here instead I made an updated Zip folder with the right files and tools now. Wayback Machine: archive.org/details/windows-8.1-ui-shell-componentsMediafire: mediafire.com/file/qv25gbolky9yd1h/Windows_8.1_UI_Shell_Components.zip/fileThe DLL files and there purpose: dwmcore.dll: Core library for DWM. dwmredir.dll: Redirection library for DWM. dwmapi.dll: API for DWM. uxtheme.dll: Theme Manager. comctl32.dll: Common Controls Library. shell32.dll: Contains Windows Shell API functions. user32.dll: Windows User API Client DLL. gdi32.dll: Graphics Device Interface. comdlg32.dll: Common Dialog Box Library. ole32.dll: Component Object Model (COM) Library. oleaut32.dll: OLE Automation. shdocvw.dll: Shell Doc Object and Control Library. shlwapi.dll: Shell Light-weight Utility Library. urlmon.dll: URL Moniker Services. wininet.dll: Internet Extensions for Win32. The Mui files and there purpose: explorer.exe.mui: MUI file for explorer.exe. shell32.dll.mui: MUI file for shell32.dll. dwm.exe.mui: MUI file for dwm.exe. comdlg32.dll.mui: MUI file for comdlg32.dll. ole32.dll.mui: MUI file for ole32.dll. oleaut32.dll.mui: MUI file for oleaut32.dll. shdocvw.dll.mui: MUI file for shdocvw.dll. shlwapi.dll.mui: MUI file for shlwapi.dll. urlmon.dll.mui: MUI file for urlmon.dll. wininet.dll.mui: MUI file for wininet.dll. You can look at the Readme.txt (1.08 KB) but its basically the same stuff but above but this is for if you don't have access to the website just take all the Mui and dlls and replace all of Windows 10's with Windows 8.1's I didn't list them all here

But OrthodoxWin32 this is differed this isn't some Control Panel stuff this is directly related to DWM, Titlebars, , Taskbar, File Explorer and other UI shell aspects I'm trying to get the community to make a Windows 8.1 shell for Windows 10 and 11 with these files and bring back the styling of Windows 8.1's taskbar to those OSes. Windows 7 and 8.1 have better Aminations than Windows 10 so I copied all of these files so a project could be started on them so we can transfer Windows 10 from ugly to good with these files besides Windows 10's Aminations are stight up garbage they are different compared to Windows 7 and 8.1's. Like people took the File Explorer from Windows 10 and turned it into the ExplorerPatcher Project I want the same to be done to these but give the look and feel of Windows 8.1 without the start screen maybe get rid of the UGLY Looking Windows I hate the way they look in Windows 10 and 11 boardless and shit like that what are these LINUX!? Besides they have ugly captionbox buttons you know the Close, Maximize, and Minimize buttons they are just fucking monochrome like that shit looks uglier than everything else I saw. I'm just trying to merge UI elements into these newer OSes not trying to reattach the Control Panel. I want to heavily modify the look of the UI and make it look more accurate to Windows 8.1.

Thank you, I understand better. Personally, I do not have sufficient development skills for a project like this, but if someone wants to carry out a project of this type, that would be good. Afterwards, there are two projects in one in what you propose: - Window Management (DWM) - The Windows Shell (Explorer)

I want to see how much I can push Windows 10 21H2 to look exactly like Windows 8.1 only using Windows 8.1 components.

For starters, you can take most of the desktop apps, like Notepad, Paint, etc, maybe some UWP apps too, but they require more messing around. You may also have luck with certain control panel applets.

Wayback Machine: archive.org/details/windows-8.1-u-dwmMediafire: mediafire.com/408w6f1evkn08de/Windows+8.1+uDWM.zip/fileWe could try to make a Shell replacement using these will not me of course I have no coding skills what so ever... we can finally get rid of the icky and ugly Windows 10 and 11 UI and replace them with something more functional and better looking.

Hey, does this really work for Windows 11, I mean version 23h2? Just wanted to make sure, I already have the sounds, themes, and wallpapers but if I replace the current dlls and the stuff with those from the windows 8.1 ui shell components folder, will that cause my laptop to mess up?

I made a system restore point just in case things go south, but yeah please explain the steps. I'm finally awake, this is a Virtual Machine download and install it www.virtualbox.org/ and download the Windows 11 iso off the site, you can't just copy and replace the files like that because of trusted installer getting a USB Flash Drive than burning a Linux Distro like Ubuntu which you don't have to install once you boot it off the USB can be booted into the Desktop you have to mount your disk you will see an icon and once you open the window right click and you will see a menu click on propiereyes and make sure you can read and write to the drive and sure you change all settings to that and it will allow you to drop those files hit Ctrl + T afterwards to make a new tab. rufus.ie/ubuntu.com/download/desktopYou can either use a VM or do this on baremetal.
