i downloaded the simple classic theme earlier today. the taskbar and start menu changes work fine, however, the skin doesn't apply to file explorer and many other programs. i'm not sure if i'm supposed to disable DWM or not. another issue is that when i press "configurations" to change the theme, clicking "apply" crashes display properties. it just says the usual "not responding" until i have to force close it. i really hate the windows 8+ take on the UI and i would love to go back. but somehow, i always seem to run into issues with it. i'm on windows 10, version 2004

Enable "Launch folder windows in separated process" in File Explorer Options.
As for Display Properties, it seems it hangs on some environment when apply the settings. This issue did not happen on VM or safe mode, so I doubt GPU driver affects it. Therefore you can use safe mode to change the theme instead.

okay. i’ll try it out once i get home. do you know any other places i could ask for help with this? i recently wiped my hard drive due to another method messing my comp up so badly. i a lot of menus and program GUIs broke. so this time i decided to mess it up first, and then obtain the important things. i was hoping this time would go better, but nothing is ever perfect with this stuff : /

On Windows 11 you would not need this: with Explorer Patcher, the taskbar can also run under classic theme.

That's irrelevant: another issue is that when i press "configurations" to change the theme, clicking "apply" crashes display properties ... i'm on windows 10, version 2004 As for the issue with the configuration dialog: I'm in the works of creating a new dialog for applying classic color schemes. Unfortunately I cannot give an ETA for that so you'll have to use SCT in Safe Mode to apply color schemes. You could also try a reg I made a while back, it worked for the OP of the first SCT GitHub issue on this topic: github.com/WinClassic/SimpleClassicTheme/issues/22#issuecomment-773878761
