It didn't work. Do I have to delete and reinstall completely or can I just update?

It didn't work. Do I have to delete and reinstall completely or can I just update? What resolution is it saying it is in the settings app? To answer your question, updating and restarting should work.

(Modern) Laptop screens don't like having lower resolutions than it's supposed to be, even if it's the same aspect ratio, so it appears stretched or pixelated.

No it's native 1920x1080 but it has been 800x600 since I first got it in February, it's only causing issues now. It used to display perfectly in 800x600 and 1024x768
