Its possible to change the icon and the computer text from registry by navigating to HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Lockdown_Zones\0 and modifying the icon string value and the icon value to whatever you want this will allow you to make it accurate to the way xp and 2000 showed zones Requested by toiletflusher/techsalt to post here all credits goes to him! EDIT: you need xp's urlmon.dll otherwise it wont work

You can also modify DisplayName to change the name

Actually XP's urlmon is only needed to change text, for icon you don't need to patch anything

Actually XP's urlmon is only needed to change text, for icon you don't need to patch anything You also need to hexedit xp’s shlwapi to it, you should not replace 10’s urlmon either, i will explain more details about this later

Get the following files from XP x64: shlwapi.dll urlmon.dll Hexedit urlmon.dll
Rename shlwapi.dll to chlwapi.dll, no need to hexedit this one Rename urlmon.dll to crlmon.dll Find & Replace urlmon.dll with crlmon.dll Find & Replace shlwapi.dll with chlwapi.dll Save it Put the files in C:\Windows\status Open regedit, Ctrl + F the CLSID: {7b8a2d95-0ac9-11d1-896c-00c04Fb6bfc4} Take ownership of InprocServer32 and put inside it: C:\Windows\status\crlmon.dll Restart explorer and it should display your custom zone text

Just shows up as blank, no icon or text. I've attached two screenshots of my regedit settings, maybe you can see something I missed (either that or I've not hex edited the files correctly). Thank you. EDIT: I've noticed balloon tips no longer appear for me now. Side effect? EDIT2: I returned the CLSID back to normal - this restored the icon and text back to the status bar, but it had the changed icon. Text remained as "Computer" though, so I've def not hex edited it correctly. Balloon tips still not working for me. EDIT3: Logging out and back in restored balloon tips for me. Very odd. I also restored the CLSID back to the modified DLL. Attachments:

Note: if you have issues getting this to work, make sure your urlmon.dll is from IE6, not IE8

Pro tip: Set status bar font to nothing, so it uses the ToolTip font just like in XP/2000

If you want to change the text of other zones you can edit the keys belong to Zones key instead of Lockdown_Zones. (But not tested for Trusted sites and Restricted sites)
