Hi there,
I am doing this topic today because I have a question about the feasibility of a modification to the Windows 11 file explorer.
Here is the situation: I am configuring the new windows 11 computer of an elderly and blind person, who is having a lot of difficulty with the change. This person was using windows xp no more than a week ago and was doing very well with it, habits and haunts having been integrated for several years. Unfortunately, her computer is no longer working and she has to upgrade to windows11. After doing several searches, I succeeded in modifying the system enormously, lightening it, removing all applications, unnecessary services, reconfiguring the taskbar, XP-style start menu with Open-Shell, all the modifications possible with ExplorerPatcher, I checked everything, including the windows 7 menu bar in the file explorer which helped a lot, the x32 list view in the explorer, the removal of the search box, in short, I did a very big job on this machine which looks like windows 98 now and which is nevertheless very, very fast!
Nevertheless, I come to you because there remains only one option which causes problem for this person, it is the button to sort the elements by name, by types etc… In the file explorer. Since this person is blind, they have to navigate a lot with the tab key on the keyboard and often come up against the sort and reorder button, which is right after the list of items in the file explorer. This button also shows up in save and open dialogs and wastes a lot of time. Do you know if there is a tweak to make this button disappear, like I was able to make the search bo x disappear with ExplorerPatcher? Thank you very much in advance for your much appreciated help!

Hello djaccess2 , This button is located on which element of the file explorer (in the command bar, the status bar, the side panel or the file view) ? It is possible to disable the Windows 7 command bar : www.askvg.com/how-to-make-folder-band-auto-hidden-in-windows-vista/This tutorial also works in Windows 8, 10 and 11.

Hello, Thank you very much, I have successfully downloaded the file on the computer. However, I encounter a problem. When I wanted to replace the Shellstyle.dll, I got a message that it was not possible because of a permission problem. So I tried to grant the system32 folder permissions to my administrator account, but in the permission tab, I don't see the add button. So unfortunately I couldn't test it. I will continue to search to see if there is a solution to obtain these administrator rights.

I will continue to search to see if there is a solution to obtain these administrator rights. You need to get the property of the object. Here, we must therefore change the owner of shellstyle.dll (the original shellstyle.dll). Typically, the initial owner is TrusteInstaller. Change it to any account with administrative privileges.

Hello,
I managed to grant the right rights to the file and to replace it, thank you!
On the other hand, unfortunately, the button I am talking about is still present.
Being myself a blind person, it would be difficult for me to tell you where exactly this button is, but despite that I will try to be more precise. I'm talking about the sort and reorder button in the file explorer. Where it says sort by name, type, total size and free space. I think you can click there with the mouse to sort the items. Sometimes also, this button disappears and is replaced by another series of button in the same place, reorganize, open, grant access, new folder, display, etc… It appears and in the file display window in the explorer file, and in the open and save dialog boxes. For the Open and Save dialog boxes, the buttons are instead Name, Edit, Type, and Size. In both places I would like to make this go away. Thank you very much for your help and sorry if my explanations lack precision.

In fact, modifying the shellstyle.dll in the system32 folder only disables the command bar with the classic theme enabled, which I didn't notice out of habit. For the Aero theme, you must replace the shellstyle.dll file present in the "C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\aero\Shell\NormalColor" folder. It should normally work. Keep me informed of the outcome.

I did modify the shellstyle.dll file in the system32 folder, but normally it should work because I use a theme called windows xp classic.
What I can do to test is possibly make a windows 7 virtual machine, put the shellstyle.dll file in the system32 folder using the real classic windows 7 theme which is very light too. If it works in the virtual machine I would try to make it all work on windows 11 but this time with the classic theme of windows 7.

If you are using a custom visual style, you must modify the shellstyle.dll file which corresponds to the visual style folder : C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\ your_visual_style_folder\Shell\NormalColor You just have to replace the your_visual_style_folder name with the name of the folder in which your visual style is stored.

Hello, Thank you for this suggestion. Unfortunately, in the folder: c:\windows\resources/themes
All my themes are .theme files, there are no folders.

Hello, Thank you for this suggestion. Unfortunately, in the folder: c:\windows\resources/themes All my themes are .theme files, there are no folders. In this case it's simpler, it means that you use the default visual style. You must therefore modify the shellstyle.dll file located in the C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\aero\Shell\NormalColor folder.
