Windows Media Player 9 on Windows 10 file association issues

I've got WMP 9 installed on Windows 10 22H2, it works fine (no library, but don't care about that) other than when I set it as the default program for music files it comes up with a "How do you want to open this file?" message. and WMP is listed under "Keep using this app". No matter how many times I've tried to press that checkbox it comes up every single time. This is the only program on my computer that has this problem. From what I gather, it has to do with the application not properly setting itself as the default program for the file types, but I have no clue how to fix it.

Here's the issue:
