I am trying out Windows 11 LTSC and using this amazing site to help get it to be the way I want it, more like XP. I just had success getting everything perfect but then some Windows update destroys it all. In Windows 8.1 that I am using now there aren't any more updates and the ones I used to get when it was supported didn't uninstall the theme patcher and so on.
Windows update in 11: Deletes Outlook Express (I got this years ago but I know not where) Uninstalls the theme patcher, Restores ExplorerFrame.dll
What is the best way of protecting these and/or quickest and effortless way of them restoring them after an update.
I want to mess around with system and file icons next but I can see they will be undone during Windows updates too.

Not updating is the only solution. Pause or disable Windows Updates.

I suppose there would be a way of automatically putting everything back after any updates?

I suppose there would be a way of automatically putting everything back after any updates? If you don't wanna disable updates there isn't much things you can do.Copy them back yourself or make a script to do it.

Oh I'll disable updates but I'll need to update eventually for security reasons. I guess it's a case of holding off for a sufficient time and then doing it all in one go and putting everything back after.

Nuke wuaueng.dll and wuauclt.exe from System32 and you'll never have to worry about it again

Thank you for the information about what files to deal with. Is that what everyone here does?
Doesn't this pose security issues though?
I didn't mind not getting security updates in 8.1 because it's dead so no-one's going to try compromising it as no-one uses it. Newer OS like 10 and 11 are targets surely.

Sacrificing security patches is one of those things you just have to get used to if you want to maintain patch stability. You can mitigate this as much as possible by avoiding cold patches (i.e. use Windhawk instead of modifying files with Resource Hacker), but that's about it. Even then, it's not guaranteed that symbols will be immediately available or some expected behaviour of a hook won't change much, but it is far less likely to break than cold-patched files would.

I guess I could hold off on updates until I have checked that all the problems have been ironed out and that the Windhawk mods work with the new updates.

It is an opensource utility and its older version is available in Windows Store (but better, just take it from Github)

Seems to be a dead project! Fortunately someone responded about 3 hours ago in an issue with his more updated project that might be of some interest to y'all: github.com/xanasoft/MajorPrivacyIt looks like it can do a lot and I bet you can manually block windows update in there too (DLL disabler etc)

So I take it everyone uses another AV other that Defender if all updates are turned off? In my current daily install (8.1) I am using Kaspersky. I read that Defender was pretty good in Wind 10 and 11 and I've seen it mentioned a few times by users on here but without updates it would be useless.

Just disable updates,no need to nuke them completely. And you can always download updates for defender from update catalog.

Ah what about, using Legacy Update to do all the updates that you want it to do? legacyupdate.net/
