I'm opening this thread to discuss the deprecation notice that Microsoft has issued regarding the Control Panel, as discussed in this article and this one, and what potential implications this may have for the future.

See, the real problem is classic theme, how will we get ms settings themed? Indeed. And not only the classic theme, but also all custom visual styles, which are not supported in ModernUI apps.

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LSTC 2021 will still have the old Control Panel but I will temporarily use Windows 11 21H2 with DWM turned off within ExplorerPatcher, Open Shell, 21332 ExplorerFrame and Windhawk.

The latest applet that's getting migrated is fonts cpl,and some display cpl leftovers like colorcpl and cleartype settings. On latest canary builds iirc.

Microsoft will probably never physically remove the Control Panel, because some applications depend on it (for example, there are third-party applets). It will last as long as the shell32 namespace lasts. On the other hand, the question arises about the future of some applets... There are two major types of applets: Windows Vista/7 style applet, written most of the time with DirectUI (I think, I could be wrong), integrated into the shell32 namespace. The Rectify11 team managed to write one, it is the first applet of this type not written by Microsoft. Older style applets, of the "property page" type. It is much easier to recode an applet of this type, it has been done several times. There are still many, the most numerous are those associated with hardware or driver properties. Most should last as long as MMC (MMC hosts all the "Windows administration tools" type applets); in fact, MMC applets like Device Manager communicate with property page applets.

Not sure, I think the colorcpl and cleartype settings applets will be easy to port after their removal. However, I'm more worried about fonts cpl.

This is getting really bad and this is why I may not stick around on Windows the future is XMAL, WinUI, UWP, and MAUI and Settings is a worse Control Panel no that would be an insult to Control Panel, so Settings needs to go I'm not a fan of where Windows is heading.

The thing is, control panel should be able to be ported for a couple of versions unless ms block access to control.exe, but we would have to export all the reg keys related to control panel to re add the options

It's connected with shell32 and explorer. Also the approach MS takes with CPL applets is different now. Instead of removing the stuff completely they redirect its GUID. Like systemcpl(on 11 only, the method used in 10 is different),installed updates, troubleshooting cpl main page, default programs main page. The pages themselves are not removed and just redirected. I would expect them to do the same thing before removing them.

This is still bad this feels like a dystopia; I just want things to be simple Microsoft keeps wanting to push the garbage UWP Settings app that is dumbed down and meant to be more "Touch Friendly" in quotes seriously this is not android or iOS we should just stick to the Control Panel and Microsoft should stop removing parts from it and stop trying to kill it so much.
