I was researching how to get the Windows 7 Basic theme on Windows 11, when I came across 2 programs, BasicThemer2 and BasicThemer...5?
BasicThemer2 is by Ingan121, whereas BasicThemer5 is by arukateru/Alcatel
BasicThemer2 used honest imagery, a copy of Windows 10 transformed into Windows Vista, with several programs including BasicThemer2 running.
As for BasicThemer5, it has way more deceiving imagery. It just used an image of Windows 7 with a BasicThemer5.exe running in the background to mask the fact that the image is Windows 7
The question is, which one is better? BasicThemer5 was flagged as malware, whereas BasicThemer2 was not flagged.
Does BasicThemer5 have some kind of advantage over BasicThemer2?
The post "STAY AWAY FROM ANY CONTENT MADE BY ALCATEL!" mentions to stay away from BasicThemer5 along with other programs/sites by Alcatel.

While Alcatel has spread malware using a hacked DWMBlurGlass, BasicThemer5 seems to be safe but if I were you, compile your own copy.
I also highly recommend to look at the source code of his mods/programs before using them. BasicThemer5 in this case is open source, so you can read it's source code.

I'd suggest you to use Windhawk and aubymori's Basic Themer mod. If you want a non-windhawk implementation, you could use BasicThemer6: github.com/catneptune/basicthemer6I would avoid completely using Alcatel's tools, not only because Alcatel has demonstrated inmature behavior (as well as cookie logging 10+ people), but because his tools have become extremely outdated with new solutions being available.

BasicThemer5 and BasicThemer6 are pretty much the same. Both apply basic theme to everything and offer no control. It seems though that BT6 is more lightweight.

damn I thought this was basicthemer5 vs basicthemer2 not brawllux vs enderboyπ Basicthemer has an inclusion and exclusion list;basicthemer5 does not have that but it applies to everything(when launched as TI) almost instantly. Both have been superseded by aubreys basic themer WH mod tho. It has the speed of BT5 and the feautes of BT2. Best choice for a basic setup when combined with DWM Unextend frames mod by aubrey as well.

Whether it will actually apply is another matter.

It's worth remembering that BasicThemer5 wasn't written by Alcatel, although the name was coined by him. The source code was originally published here by someone else, and this is stated in the README of the repository by Alcatel: github.com/spddl/disableDWMactivitys

BasicThemer6 constantly loops over all windows in the system in the background, whereas BasicThemer5 (and 3, and aubymori's Windhawk mod) subscribe to events published by the OS to detect when a window has been created. I would consider the latter to be significantly more lightweight, even though the former is doable in fewer lines of code.

Let me give a basic rundown of all these BasicThemer applications.
BasicThemer2: - Written in C#, runs on .NET Framework. Not very ideal for such a lightweight application. - Applies to every window, running a loop. - Has blacklist functionality.
BasicThemer5: - Written in Go. Odd language choice, runs fast but it's hard to modify unless you know Go. - Applies to every new active window. Windows opened in the background or before the application is started will not get basic theme unless you activate them. - No blacklist functionality.
BasicThemer6: - Written in C++. Great choice. - Applies to every window, running in a loop, like BasicThemer2. - No blacklist functionality.
Basic Themer Windhawk mod: - Written in C++. - Applies to all current windows and every new windows by hooking DWM. - Has blacklist functionality. - Can apply to the secure desktop (UAC, LogonUI), either along with the user's desktop, or exclusively.
All in all, for the average user, the Windhawk mod is probably the best choice, and it's the easiest to set up.

You also had what was coined "BasicThemer3", used in in early releases of Windows eXPerience. This one functioned in the same way as BT5, but it was written in Visual Basic 6 and complained if you lacked the Korean-language runtime library for VB6.
The original "Basic Themer" was an AutoHotKey script, if I recall correctly, and "BasicThemer4" was a Windhawk mod that Taniko Yamamoto was writing but never finished.

The source code was originally published here by someone else, and this is stated in the README of the repository by Alcatel: github.com/spddl/disableDWMactivitysIndeed. And we can see, by comparing the code of two projects, that Alcatel has changed almost nothing, he just made the program run in the background, rather than in a console window.
