Since Windows 11 has set Windows customization back by what probably feels like a century I think it would be helpful to have a full list of everything that you could customize on Windows 10 and below that you can't on Windows 11 including what version broke what. We could update this over time to get an idea of how far we've caught up. Also, will Win11 ever catch up to where Win10 is now or are we always going to be further behind?

For use with a classic theme, Win11 23H2 and earlier is as good as Win10, provided that all the appropriate Windhawk mods are installed.
Windows 11 24H2 removed the classic taskbar and the classic Alt+Tab dialog. These are the things Windows 11 really broke.

Isn't theming for the most part much more limited now as well?

Windows 11 also broke the non-immersive context menu for windows 10 themes

This isn't exactly a solution but could a possible work-around be the xp-era alt-tab powertoy? I'm not sure if it works on 11, but it works with themes + the classic theme

A similar thing could be created that specifically imitates the classic theme look. Valinet also has a reference project which implements a custom alt+tab UI.

Couldn't most removed features be recreated from scratch if anyone were bothered?

That sounds interesting, from a google search it sounds like simple window switcher replicates 10's ui pretty well, so hopefully will see an nt style someday.
Although now that I've been thinking about it, how exactly is the nt window switcher handled? Since it appears when explorer isn't running I'm guessing it's tied to something else

"NT" window switcher is implemented into win32k.sys, the kernel driver which implements the Windows User environment and GDI.

Since 24H2 has axed the ability to enable the classic theme how you normally would I wonder if the theme itself will ever be entirely removed if that's even possible

I see, trying to restore it would be too risky if not impossible, I'm not sure if the explorer patcher developers already have some of this stuff in mind, but I hope they'll consider classic theme compatibility since ep already covers so much

ExplorerPatcher already has a working solution for this, so I don't think they'll consider this particular appearance though.

It's certainly possible that they could remove it, but that would only really be done if they were to change the fallback appearance. I think that it's unlikely, but Microsoft don't really care about backwards compatibility anymore, so it's certainly something that could happen.

Couldn't most removed features be recreated from scratch if anyone were bothered? This usially creates a lot of glitches because the re-creator usually only bothers about own usecase. For instance, the OpenShell developers do not bother about the Classic Theme compatibility because they do not use it. Explorer Patcher's fix for classic-themed taskbar does not work on multiple monitors, because the devs only use one monitor. And so on.

It does not install on 11.
