I know this is possible with Resource Hacker, but I'm not totally sure on what to actually do with it, or what to replace the files with. Since I assume somebody here has done this before, could you please provide me with the bitmaps (or whatever else) that I should actually replace the icons with to make it look like XP's?
Or if nobody has done XP, then how about 2000 or earlier? I really just want to get rid of those ugly Aero-style ones.

The Navigation Buttons for the Classic Theme are in ExplorerFrame.dll for the Classic Theme. If you're using Visual Styles on Windows 8 or newer, they're in the active msstyles file.

I know, but could you tell me precisely what to do to change them? And where I can get the correct bitmaps? Is there some kind of tutorial online for this?

I just use customizergod. once opened, click the little icon on the bottom right hand corner next to restore, and click 'Open File'. Once you have done that, search for C:\Windows\System32\explorerframe.dll, and over here you can edit the navigation buttons for the classic theme *and* regular theme. If you want to edit them, click on the resource and then 'Export resources'. When you are editing said file you have to make it within the same dimensions. I use the file itself as a reference. In fact, here are some navigation buttons I have made (XP and 9x style) The file names are kinda mixed up because i cba to rename them but just use them to your tastes. Attachments:Icons.zip (79.82 KB)

This is great and exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Is there a way to make the buttons bigger, so I could get, for instance, the text "Back" under the back button like it was in XP?

as far as i know, its physically impossible Unrelated, but is it possible to edit things from the normal Windows 8.1 theme, such as title bar text colour (and the colour of the minimise/maximise/close buttons), by doing this, too? Is this pretty much what things like Windows Style Builder do?

On Windows 8 and newer, with Visual Styles enabled, enlarging the back button is as simple as enlarging the image in the msstyles.
