There were people who were starting XP explorer under later Windows versions. They found that tray was not working.
But on XP it seems tray is governed by systray.exe, so it is worth to try XP explorer with this program.

I was able to too, only new programs that use the tray can have the XP tray. ReactOS NEW explorer has the same issue.
