Hi all, I was wondering if anyone here knew of a way to disable the DWM/aero equivalent on windows 10. I'm currently using a dying Windows 7 PC, which allows you to do this via disabling desktop composition from properties of an application. Unfortunately it looks like I'll have to upgrade to windows 10 to accomodate new components I'll be buying and i'm concerned i'll be losing this functionalityin Windows 10. The reason why I require this feature is that when you run an application in windowed mode, DWM adds a small amount of input lag (3 frames) which is a night and day difference in certain genres of games (and yes, because they are old they unfortunately don't work in full screen very well/arn't intended to be played full screen on a large monitor. It's in japanese but you can see extensive testing conducted on the following URL: yappy-t.hatenadiary.org/entry/20100726/1280167292For windows 8, there was this batch file that was created by the Osu community that simply killed the process and re-enabled it with the press of a button. This wasn't an ideal solution as you lost all explorer functionality while it was active, but it was much better than what's available with win 10 as far as i can tell. This is a thread discussing the composition disabler for windows 8: osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/177218Thanks in advance.

It is possible to kill DWM even in 20H1, but it causes a lot of problems, not limited to visual problems (blackouts or such). Visual problems can be fixed by killing all the Immersive/UWP components, but the real problem is that killing DWM makes all programs unstable. They freeze a lot, some don't start at all, and some don't exit properly and keep using system resources. Those problems are solved as soon as DWM is restored. And I think killing DWM even makes the display much slower on newer W10 versions, but I'm not sure about it.
(I think it was not that unstable in 1703)
If you want to kill DWM anyways, check my DWM killer script on github.com/Ingan121/DWMKiller. (Only Korean language is supported for now, but you can just run the script and press the enter key) This disables Immersive/UWP components to fix some visual problems, but I recommend starting the game before killing DWM and restoring it as soon as you finished playing the game.

Thanks for the response!
I'll make sure to give that a go, it sounds pretty similar to the windows 8 file that i mentioned in the original post. The making displays much slower sounds like a problem though, since that sounds like it'd create more input lag instead of remove it.

If so, try the following to check what is causing this: 3. Go to C:\Program Files\AutoHotkey, copy AutoHotkey.exe to AutoHotkeyUIA.exe to the same directory 4. Run ResHacker as admin, open the copied exe, go to Manifest→1: 1033, change uiAccess="false" to uiAccess="true", press F5 and then press Ctrl+S
5. Follow the readme.txt in the self signing tool. You need to choose C:\Program Files\AutoHotkey\AutoHotkeyUIA.exe in step 3 6. When done, drag and drop the WindowSpy.ahk in C:\Program Files\AutoHotkey to AutoHotkeyUIA.exe in the same directory 7. Check if it is on top of everything (excluding focused accessibility tools) then check the Follow Mouse option
8. Open Task Manager and turn on the Always on Top option, run the script to kill DWM, move the cursor to the black area to find out what is causing the black screen, then kill it using the task manager

You can restart it with a key combination. Guide: winaero.com/blog/restart-video-driver-windows-10/

Thanks for trying to help. The combination works until the dwm shuts down, After that, nothing happens, no beep, no driver reboot The screenshot shows the task manager, the windows spy (ahk) and alt tab window.Al tab works like, but switching between windows gives nothing .Task manager freezes, windows spy too, so screen data is not updated (everything freezes). The mouse is visible, But clicks do nothing UPD. I removed the StartIsBack and the classic task Manager (third-party tool), now task manager is working at least Attachments:

Yo, itʻs finally working, thanks for tips, guys! I deleted SearchApp.exe and StartMenuExperienceHost.exe from SystemApps, now no more freezes and black screen I renamed it and nothing happened, as UWP apps cannot run when dwm is disabled. Anyways, just do what plavil did if you do not want to rename SystemApps entirely.
