So, I tried Win 11 on a real hard drive partition.
Overall, my impression is that it is of much less quality than we saw in the reviews. On the other hand, nothing much different from Windows 10.
- In file explorer one can return from the Win11 toolbar to the ribbon, to the command bar, to the menu. One step more is needed but otherwise the result is the same as on Win10.
- The navbar became really huge, while the buttons in some dialogs became really microscopic. Еру The AHK-based navbar remover does not correctly work, at least, without modification.
- They replaced one metro context menu with another metro context menu. Still, under Classic theme they are empty. ExplorerContextMenuTweaker seems not to work (failed to register).
- There is still Win 10 taskbar in the release version of Windows 11. Can be turned on via registry. Works decently (with Open Shell, as the Metro-based menu is removed). One can bring back Quick Launch toolbar.
- Unfortunately the 7+TT does not work (yet?) with the Win10-style taskbar.
- The Win7-style volume control and mixer can be brought back via registry.
- Under Classic theme it looks the same way as on Win10. Heavily blured. No text on taskbar buttons. The hue can be possibly removed by tweaking color settings. But the taskbar panel (toolbar) itself is broken with no text. Taskbow possibly can fix it. I wanted to make a screenshot of almost-classic taskbar, but non-metro scissors tool was removed, as well as paint, so I could not. Paint from Vista also seemingly does not run.
- The hack to remove the navbar from open/save dialogs no longer works. You simply denied access to the registry key, even if regedit is run as System (maybe can be solved by more complicated means, I have no idea). Trying to run something as TrustedInstaller makes Process Hacker to crash.
- A lot of features were removed. For instance, on Win8.1 I have my display going dimmer when the power cable is disconnected. This helps me to notice the moment. On Win11 this has been removed. Many non-Metro control panel modules were also removed.
Is it slower? No. But makes impression of much lesser quality.
