I prefer having folder thumbnails off while keeping all other thumbnails working. EDITED. The method below is by user @itslezr and is much better than the original one in this post! The following reg file does the trick: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.0
;Disable folder thumbnails without disabling thumbnail view for files
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell] "Logo"="None"
Additionally, one can this reg file to change the folder icon to somewhat more classic look (the one used in MMC by default): Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons] "3"="C:\\windows\\system32\\dmdskres.dll,-372" "4"="C:\\windows\\system32\\dmdskres.dll,-373"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons] "3"="C:\\windows\\system32\\dmdskres.dll,-372" "4"="C:\\windows\\system32\\dmdskres.dll,-373"
This will make the folders to appear this way: Attachments:

If one wants the Win95-style icons, the following reg file applies: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons] "3"="C:\\windows\\system32\\fde.dll,-400" "4"="C:\\windows\\system32\\ntlanui2.dll,-115" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons] "3"="C:\\windows\\system32\\fde.dll,-400" "4"="C:\\windows\\system32\\ntlanui2.dll,-115"

it apparently appears as gray in detailed view. any way to change this? Yes, there is. The problem with the icon in FDE.dll is it only contains an image for 32x32px. As such, it doesn't display as intended at 16x16px. The solution would be to use the original icon from Win95, however I can do you one better than that. Bellow are the Win98 folder icons with the 8-bit images removed. The advantage of this is it includes an image for 48x48px, while the 16x16px and 32x32px images are identical to the Win95 versions. To use them, simply swap out the strings pointing to the DLLs with the path to the ICO files. Folder Closed.ico (3.16 KB) Folder Open.ico (2.66 KB)

Win98 had different icons than Win95.

Win98 had different icons than Win95. Yes, but the 4-bit images are identical to Win95. I removed the 8-bit images from the Win98 icons so the 4-bit (Win95 style) ones were all that's left.

anixx , I already had changed the folder icons, so I didn't have to do the second part. But the first reg that supposedly removes folder thumbnails doesn't work for me and I have windows 8.1. Do you know how to solve this problem?

This KINDA works on 7, But it doesn't really work with Thumbnails on which defeats the whole purpose.

Necro, but setting folder thumbnail icons to a non-existent file works for me on Win10.

@itslezr it is absolutely great idea for Win10 users and for those Win11 users who want a custom folder icon. I edited the first post in this thread to change it to your method.
