You'd probably need to disable Open Shell messing with the taskbar itself.

Sorry if this might be obvious, but I don't know how to do it myself. I'm on Windows 11, and I'd like to know. How do you go about disabling both the ribbon and command bar with Windows Explorer?

The 11 one can be replaced with the 7 one easily with tools like ExplorerPatcher. The 7 one isn't conventionally disabled, but shellstyle.dll (which sits in the theme folder) is modified to hide it. Here is a tutorial (ignore OldNewExplorer parts): winclassic.net/thread/759/tutorial-remove-command-bar-windows

Up to Windows Vista, it plays "Default Beep" sound when displaying a message box without icon. Does anyone know how to restore this in Windows 10?

No need to do it on your own, you need Project 2000, it's based on Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021.

Does anyone else have the problem of Retrobar (and desktop icons, all icons really) refreshing regularly and flickering? This happens sometimes on all Windows versions, but it seems to be nearly constant when I am using the classic theme. It does not happen as frequently when using actual UX themes. I've cleared my icon caches and disk scanned multiple times, but to no avail. It wouldn't be such a bother with just the desktop icons, but when in a maximized window seeing the taskbar vanish suddenly every couple minutes (or more frequently sometimes) is very irritating and distracting. I'm on Win10 22h2. Seems like a reinstall may be necessary to reduce the issue, but I don't know if it's fixable.

Refreshing and therefore flickering desktop icons are normal. But it shouldn't happen all the time. On my Windows 10 it happens a few minutes after logging on.
From then on only occasionally. On Windows 7 less frequently.
No one knows why, it's just the way it is.
In my opinion RetroBar is just crap, to put it mildly...
If the real taskbar frequently vanishes and reappears it would mean that explorer frequently crashes, which of course isn't normal.
But with RetroBar that could be "normal" behavior. Just don't use it.
If there is anything that you especially like about it, maybe we (someone?) can find a better solution.

I like that it has themes for XP as well as dynamically changing color with the cpl scheme, as well as the fact that the app is portable. It also has to have old style quick launch, I detest 'pin to taskbar'. If it's portable, I won't mind the lack of XP themes as much since I can use both if needed.

Ok, the original taskbar also changes the color with the scheme, that's sorted out. The original taskbar also has quick launch (you just have to add the quick launch folder to it) You also don't have to use the "super bar" (that's the name of this "pin to taskbar" crap). The original doesn't come with an XP theme but (I don't know how well Window Blinds or something would work with it but presumably it would work with the original taskbar) So there seems to be no reason for you to use RetroBar.
Thats's the original task bar with Open shell (for the classic start menu and color settings) plus a mod that creates the 3D buttons. It's been working nicely for me, just like you would expect. As you can see, the quick launch area is also there.

What is the current method for getting the Classic theme on Windows 10? I tried "Simple Classic Theme" but it didn't work and I see now that it's marked as no longer in development.
Is there a method that is known to work? Would upgrading to Windows 11 make it easier? From the research I've done, Open Shell and RetroBar solve the taskbar and start menu but the actual window theme seems harder to get right. Ideally wouldn't like to pay for WindowBlinds either.
If anybody could point me in the right direction for a working method that would be great, thank you!

And you don't need to upgrade to Windows 11 just to use classic theme. Many people are using classic theme on Windows 10 properly (I am one of them).

Another question I have is, how do you get the Favorites and Help text in the menu bar of Explorer? I recall seeing some scattered info on the Favorites, but never Help.

However, if you want to edit the file manually instead of importing, don't use Resource Hacker. Use RisohEditor instead. Resource Hacker breaks the menu for some reason.

For some reason the en-us folder is impenetrable, I can't take full ownership of it. I used Winaero context menu to take control of the folder, and I gave full control to my user, Administrators, and TrustedInstaller and it still fails. I've taken full control over other system folders without issue, but this one will not work, even though the settings seem correct. Obviously I own the files themselves too.
Edit: Fixed, I didn't even change anything, just came back to it later and it started working.

Does someone knows to to make the "Take Ownership" option work (on Windows 7) correctly? No matter what i do, i always get denied access when i try to modify a folder that i took ownership of (such as Program Files for example), and my main worry is that my user is an admin user... What should i do?

Sorry to be a pest and I'm sure the fault is my own at one stage or another but after successfully getting the entirety of the classic theme to work correctly (save for the patched openshell DLL for fixing the taskbar, none of the links worked for me) I decided to restart my PC to see if any changes that had not yet occurred would take effect. And they did, my entire desktop is a black screen save for my cursor. Windows launches fine and Ctrl alt del works even when logged in. I'm assuming this is to do with the userinit string value messing up somehow. Is there any way to revert my registry changes so that I can use my desktop again? If not, is there any way for me to roll back to a previous windows/registry without me having to do a fresh windows install and format my drive? Thanks all. Was going so well until I restarted.
