Are we finally stuck and classic theme (with classic taskbar) will not be possible anymore? Maybe staying out of updates is good idea (22H2 seems the best, but will reach the end of updates on... October 8, 2024). How long it can be possible to use it - some apps may refuse to work some day. Working ltsc iot would be great for us for next 10 years. But is it likely at all? What are your solutions now and ideas for future?

What are your solutions now and ideas for future? I use 23h2 and it is as good as 21h2 or Win10, thanks to this mod: windhawk.net/mods/explorerframe-fixes-for-win11-22h2plus
But with 24h2 we indeed face a trouble. Ways forward:
* Someone finds a way to patch the Explorer from earlier builds of 24h2, the versions that still have the Win10 taskbar. Particularly, we need to restore the tray area. Then we would be able to use this Explorer version on later builds
* We find a way to patch the Win11 taskbar for Classic theme
* Use of the Explorer Patcher's taskbar
* Use the taskbar from Win10 (but it is unstable and often crashes, plus other issues).
* Use of Win7 Explorer using the explorer7 utility

Something like WinXshell or reactosxplorer would be needed for drawing th desktop if this continues.

Thanx for answers! So, not too optimistic summary. More or less realistic are IMHO: Solution no. 1 on anixx list. Perfect one - but guy who could help us should be MS employee who love Classic Theme as we do. Let's hope there is one. If you read - please write in this thread that 'who knows maybe it is possible'. and no. 3 Explorer Patcher's taskbar - what's the best - it is working right now, but have no Classic Theme look'n'feel. Maybe Windhawk could help there somehow? no. 6 and 7 WinXshell and reactosxplorer - do you have any experience with those and W11 24H2? Prolly both are dead end, and for sure need lots of work. :/

WinXshell and basicthemer still work on 24h2 - Ghost Edition. Tried WinXShell_RC5.1.4_beta1.7z ...Problem is unstable desktop. Taskbar works, react os program menu too, just some moinro fixes would be needed. But without programming skills no way to get any more out of it. and classic theme is broken. less broken once you use react explorer_old and retrobar

Thanks bluedxca93 for tests screenshots! I forgot about Retrobar. github.com/dremin/RetroBar (as we didn't need it in fact, yet). From first sight looks not bad.

and classic theme is broken. It is less broken than on Windows 10 without any additional modifications. I think the Windhawk mod "Eradicate immersives menu" fixes the issue.

Something like WinXshell or reactosxplorer would be needed for drawing th desktop if this continues. Or explorer7, which is probably a better solution. There are also shells like BlackBox, EmergeDesktop and CairoShell. Even LiteStep (long abandoned) draws the desktop correctly.

My most stable approach yet: 1. Extracted WinXShell_RC5.1.4_beta1.7z to c:\WinXshell ; renamed WinXShell_x64.exe to explorer.exe. Set it as default shell in regedit. 2. Set a task shedular for Retrobar 3. Installed Open shell , set a task sheduler 4. install basiic themer set a task sheduler. 5. Applied my msstyle theme and retrobar theme. However for classic them you would need some additional windhawk mods im not aware off.

It is not related to the changes in Explorer in 24H2. Do not spam.

I think the best solution would be if the StartAllBack guy would consider creating (or allowing for) a classic theme for his taskbar. Apart from minor issues it seems to replace the Win11 taskbar quite well. Even Quick Launch works as if it were a native taskbar
