This was working fine until some Windows update. Now I can't get Explorer to remember the toolbar positions and for some reason they struggle to go back in the correct order. Some times I get them all in the right place and as soon as I click lock they get all messed up again. Some times turning of the throbber (oo-er) allows it to all work and afterwards I can get turn it back on.

If you're using Windows 11, you might have to replace ExplorerFrame.dll with that of an older version (at your own risk of course). I've only tested this on Windows 10 20H2, which is 4 years old by now.

Thanks Violette I have already done that to get the Menu bar. It appears to work fine it is just sometimes I log in and it's messed up and the address bar just refuses to move to the bottom. Then when I've got it in place and I click lock they all jumble up again. It's most odd.

Then when I've got it in place and I click lock they all jumble up again. It's most odd. Hm, it might just be a general issue with explorer toolbars. I spent countless hours just on trying to get the toolbars to work like they do in Windows XP, but they seriously managed to fuck it up in subsequent releases. Now that you mention that, it sounds very similar to issues I was having randomly on my 20H2 setup, but ones which I stopped being able to reproduce and gave up on fixing iirc.
Try wiping HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser\ITBar7Layout in the registry. This will reset all toolbars you have displayed, then you can just try again.

Many thanks! I'll give that a try! Edit Haven't needed that so far as it's nearly a week and it seems pretty stable again so far.

anyone got a precomplied dll of the latest version? Try this. I haven't tested it at all, so I can't speak as to how well the new features work. This is a Release x64 build.

Where does it retrieve its strings from?
The reason I'm asking is that it displays the wrong thing in German. It says "Wechseln" instead of "Wechseln zu" next to the go button.
But apart from that: Wouldn't it be possible to hide the button (optionally)? Because old versions of Windows didn't even come with this button (only in IE).

The string is retrieved from explorerframe.dll.mui. There is only a 32-character buffer, but that's more than enough to fit the full German string. Microsoft probably just changed the string by Windows 10.
Also, Windows 2000 and XP came with the button enabled by default in Windows Explorer.

Ok thx. The strange thing is, they haven't even changed it. It still says "Wechseln zu" but only "Wechseln" is shown on the button. Anyway, I'll just keep the old version.
Unfortunately, I can't compile anything.
But maybe, if there will be another version of classicexplorer.dll, you could add an option to either hide or show the button?

I have Microsoft VC C++ Redist 2005 to 2022 (x86 and x64), SecureUXThemePatcher, Luna 10 by vaporvance on DA, BasicThemer6 and a couple of WindHawk mods, I think thats what you need for it to work. I used cmd.exe on Administrator, it says it worked but nothing shows up on file explorer.

Is there any possibility of making the address dropdown actually display folders instead of just being a white box?

Did you check the toolbars menu? What menu? ImageOkkaaay, i think your current theme is hiding the explorer address bar and the toolbars menu and yeah, just switch themes and maybe you'll see it?

Okkaaay, i think your current theme is hiding the explorer address bar and the toolbars menu and yeah, just switch themes and maybe you'll see it? The explorer menu toolbar is being hidden, but it's not a theme thing. Disable Windhawk mods which remove the toolbar and try again.
